Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is on the rise across Australia. More people are choosing cleaner, quieter, and smarter ways to move. But as more EVs hit the road, a critical question follows: where will all these vehicles charge?
For many drivers, home charging is not an option. In cities and suburbs across the country, a significant number of Australians live in apartments, terraces, or homes without driveways. This is where kerbside charging steps in as a practical, inclusive and scalable solution.
At EVX, we believe kerbside charging is the missing link in public infrastructure that truly supports the future of transport. Our mission is to bring smart, accessible EV charging to everyday streets by using what is already there: power poles.
The need for accessible, everyday charging
The traditional EV ownership model has often assumed access to a private garage or off street parking. But in reality, many Australians park their cars on the street. In places like Sydney’s Inner West, more than half of households do not have access to off street parking. This means they cannot install a home charger even if they want to.
Relying solely on fast charging stations at shopping centres or highway stops is not enough. These locations are great for long trips or emergency top ups, but they do not support everyday routines like school drop offs, local commutes, or running errands.
Kerbside charging, by contrast, fits seamlessly into daily life. It offers the same convenience as home charging, plug in at night, unplug in the morning, but in a public space. And because kerbside chargers are distributed across residential streets and community areas, they serve a broader population, including renters and apartment dwellers.
Why power poles are a smart solution
Power poles are already everywhere. They are part of the streetscape, spaced evenly, and connected to the grid. By using existing poles, EVX Polechargers avoid the need for extensive civil works, new car parks, or complicated development approvals.
This approach speeds up deployment and reduces costs. It also keeps the streetscape familiar and avoids clutter. Our Polechargers are compact, discreet, and built to integrate smoothly into their environment.
Each EVX Polecharger is designed and assembled in Sydney, made to suit Australian conditions. With a simple app-based system, users can locate a charger, plug in with their own cable, and pay per kilowatt hour. Our chargers are AC, which means they are ideal for long-duration parking and mirror the behaviour of home charging.
Supporting real communities
We work closely with local councils to install chargers where they are needed most. We consider local demand, parking availability, and EV uptake when planning each new site. Our focus is not just on the number of chargers, but on placing them where they will genuinely be used.
We currently have chargers operating across key suburbs in New South Wales, with more sites coming online in Victoria and South Australia. As of mid 2025, we have already delivered over 100 live chargers in NSW, with hundreds more in the pipeline.
Our kerbside chargers are particularly valuable for commuters, shift workers and families who need to charge overnight or while parked during the day. By being close to homes, parks, shops and workplaces, our Polechargers blend into everyday life.
A more inclusive transition to electric transport
One of the greatest barriers to EV adoption in Australia is the assumption that you need to own a house with a garage. Kerbside charging challenges that idea. It creates a more equitable path to electric transport, where your housing situation does not dictate whether you can own an EV.
This is especially important for renters, who make up a growing share of urban populations. Without access to reliable public charging, they are often excluded from the EV conversation. Kerbside chargers make the shift to electric more attainable, practical and attractive.
Built for scale and sustainability
Because EVX uses existing infrastructure, our solution is scalable. We can deploy multiple chargers in a single suburb without major disruption. Our hardware is built for longevity, with ongoing maintenance supported by a 24 hour response team.
We also prioritise renewable energy. EVX purchases 100 percent renewable power from our energy retailer, which includes sources like solar and wind. Every charging session supports a cleaner grid and a more sustainable future.
Our pricing model is fair and transparent, with no subscriptions or lock in fees. Users simply pay per session based on energy used. This makes it easy to manage and budget for, even for occasional EV drivers.
Where we are going next
With support from state and federal programs, kerbside charging is gaining momentum. In 2025, EVX was selected to deliver 278 of the 500 kerbside chargers funded under the NSW Government’s $2.8 million program over half of the entire rollout.
We are also expanding into Victoria and South Australia, with new sites planned in metropolitan and suburban areas. Our goal is to build a truly national network of community based charging infrastructure.
But our focus remains local. Each charger we install is chosen with community use in mind. We aim to support real people with real access, whether they drive daily or weekly, commute to work or take kids to school.
Kerbside charging is not a luxury or a niche offering. It is a practical, inclusive and smart solution for the next phase of Australia’s electric journey. As EV uptake accelerates, the need for everyday access to charging will only grow.
At EVX, we are proud to lead the way. Our Polechargers are built for communities, designed for convenience, and powered by renewables. We believe that charging should be simple, local and available to everyone, not just the few.
